POV:
Back on the Scotia estate, everyone in the family was out relaxing by the pool or playing in it.
“I mean man! Othello, it was just beautiful how you came flying out of nowhere, and you demolished an entire city before they even knew what was happening!
“That’s why they call it stealth, that’s the point of stealth you take’em down before they even know what hit him.”
“I’ve never seen a combat game as realistic as that one, and that was just a simulation!!! What’s the real game gonna be like?”
“Way more intense and realistic, but still a piece of cake. We’ve gone up against this team several times before…they’re good, but still, they can’t touch us.”
“Kieron is such a badass out there in that skyfield! I knew he could fly and I knew he could lead, but I’ve never actually seen him pull it altogether, like he did today. That was just incredible, just like watching a real war under one of the most highly skilled generals in history, like a Caesar or a Hannibal or a Genghis Khan!”
Kieron surveyed the scene and found his Aunt Kayshia sunbathing on the sun deck, as usual. Othello, Kwazar, Chezar, Endara Sashana, and Maxsin were playing various pool games, while Steffana was sitting quietly by the side of the pool. He climbed up the diving board and gracefully dove into the pool, then swam over to Steffana who was perched on the opposite side. Once he arrived there, he thought about playfully grabbing her and tossing her into the water, because Steffana needed to live a little. She was such an intense and serious child. She always had been. She was both wise beyond her years and ridiculously naïve. But instead of playing with her, he got right down to business.
I need for you to read everyone at the pool.
Kieron! Cmon! You know I hate doing that!
I know. I know. But somethings up Stef. Kayshia knows something, I can just feel it and I have to know exactly what. Read her first and then, project it to me, She wants to talk to me, and I want to know what’s up before I do- yu know what, just let me into your mind. I’ll do it myself, and you can just watch.
It was weird how he could get inside of Stef’s mind, but once she let him, he had learned that he had the ability to learn and use her powers. Mind reading, the more he did it through her mind, the more he learned how to do it himself. It had been pretty easy to get deep inside Kayshia’s mind, and she was pretty pissed! She knew about the island. Maxsin had told her. That freiking Maxsin! Well…Kieron was his own man. He wasn’t about to be manipulated by Maxsin or his Aunt Kayshia. He would deal with them both.
Kieron swam over to his aunt and pulled himself up out of the pool. He grabbed a towel, dried himself off, and sat down in the chaise lounge next to her.
“So what do you want to talk about?”
“Your family needs help. We need your help Kieron.”
“What can I do?”
“We need permanent visas in the free world.”
“I’m aware. And I’m working on it.”
“Oh really! Who told you to feed me that line of bullish, Kellis? What the frack is this! We’re your family! Don’t you care about what happens to us? ”
Kieron took a deep breath, and said,
“Why don’t you tell me? Why don’t you tell me, why is it than when I ask a governor of a 100th level Free World Territory to get my family members permanent visas, he tells me it’s impossible, he doesn’t have the clout. My own mother tells me that my father getting involved with her family was a mistake. When I ask her why, she tells me she’s not going to talk about it. So you tell me, what’s up?”
Kayshia was suddenly looking desperate. It was clear that there was something that she did not want to reveal. She wasn’t going to entertain any of Kieron’s questions,
“Look…I know that you just inherited a substantial amount of property in the Free World-”
“How would you know that?”
“Your little girlfriend told me.”
“I don’t have a little girlfriend.”
The one with the rich daddy, and the fancy skyvox?
“Maxsin?”
“Yeah her.”
“She’s not my girlfriend.”
“Well, she sure seems to think that she is.”
“Not surprising. She’s perpetually delusional.”
Even Kayshia had to laugh at that, and told Kieron,
“I knew you were too smart to get involved with someone like her.”
“I’m sure you’re too smart to rely upon information from someone like her.”
“So what are you saying? Did you not inherit any property?”
For some reason, Kieron decided that he didn’t want his Aunt Kayshia to know anything about his new status in the Free World, not just yet.
“I’m saying that you can’t believe everything you hear from the likes of Maxsin. But my family is my first priority always. I’m doing the very best that I can.”
“Kieron, if we go back to the real world, we will die.
“Aunt Kayshia, I would never let that happen,
“You’re very convincing.”
There was silence between them as Kayshia slowly began to realize that she was getting any real info out of Kieron…at least not without giving any up; and he wasn’t ready to do that. GAW only knew how he and his free world cousins would react to that. So she decided to try a different approach. It had always been in the back of her mind as a sort of plan B, but now, she was desperate. It was time to push the proverbial porter coordinates,
“Hasn’t Endara grown up to be such a beautiful young women?”
“Sure.”
“Even as children, you and Endara were always so close. Naturally, I’d always assumed your relationship with her would become more serious with time.”
Kieron thought about his first kiss it had been lovely and it had been with Endara. She had been his very first kiss, his very first sisual fondle. They had been kissing cousins, because as a teen boy he had fund her so damn sexy…but that was when his options had been limited. To be brutally honest, since then, he’d had better and she really didn’t appeal to him in the same way as she once had. She was pretty, in a very ordinary sort of way, her body was still very sixy and that of course, would appeal to any man, but her powers were weak. He’d never consider a partnership with her. Never.
“I know she cares about you deeply. She’s always been there for you and she always would be. That’s just how Endara is. And you know. She’d make a great mother. She’s a repro and you know not everyone is. No one in the Virtual World can reproduce without technical assistance. In the free world, I’d say you have a twenty-five percent chance of finding a repro. But in the real world, that’s were you find the best repros. In fact, I bet Endara could get anywhere from $500,000 to $1,000,000 credits for a pregnancy-”
“Enough! She’s not going to do that!”
“Well Why not Kieron? She has to secure her future some way. You haven’t exactly offered her a partnership…and she’s not getting any younger. If you won’t save us from our fate, can you at least save her? If you won’t marry her, get her a lucrative repro contract-”
“No! Endara is an apart of my family and I’m gonna take care of my family. Everybody. It’s just going to take some time.”
“So then…You are going to offer her a partnership?”
“I didn’t say that…Aunt Kayshia, I’m way too young to think about partnering with anybody. I’m not ready to settle down.”
“But you really wouldn’t have to. Endara wouldn’t begrudge you your amusements; but you should commit to someone loyal, knows who you are and where you’ve been.”
Kieron thought about what his aunt was saying and he knew in his heart of hearts, it was true. Truthfully, in his younger days he’d had a huge crush on Endara. She’d always been so voluptuous, sexy, and mysterious being five years older; and everyone knew that she wasn’t his cousin by blood, being orphaned on Kayshia’s doorsteps.
“Kieron, I know that you are destined for greatness. Just look at your father, a free world hero, such big shoes to fill, but I know you are going to fill them. But a man like the one that you are becoming requires a partner with tremendous strength and tremendous loyalty. Beautiful women are the prizes that powerful men often seek, but inevitably they are often the cause of these same men’s demise. Endara is practical, full of real world survival skill. She’d never cause the kinds of problems that Maxsin will surely bring you.”
“Aunt Kayshia, I’m not partnering with anyone, any time soon. Even if that was a current goal, I’d never partner with Maxin. I’m far too young; and partnership is far too complicated to even be a consideration for me, right now.”
Kieron neglected to inform Kayshia that his future partnership had already been secured by a grandfather whose vision insisted that he entwine his destiny with that of a Scott. The matter was clearly settled in his mind, and the arguments that Kayshia offered for Endara, only strengthened Kieron’s convictions about Steffana. Yes, it was true, first and foremost he needed someone who’d be loyal. Steffana’s loyalty to him could not be questioned. Even though Kayshia had accurately predicted that self-absorbed beauties like Maxsin ultimately led all her men to their inevitable destruction, Steffana was not nearly as self-absorbed as Maxsin, nor was she nearly as destructive, but she would be just as beautiful, if not more so; he was certain of it; he did not have to sacrifice beauty for loyalty. But strength, now that was a tricky one, Steffana was strong…to a point, but beyond certain points she would break. He knew this. But she was young. He consoled himself with this thought. She was simply young. Once she matured, she would have Endara’s strength too. It was Steffana who would be his perfect mate…and he was also consoled by those two future tense words – would be.
He couldn’t even consider the partnership with her for several years, in the meantime, he was free. And he needed this freedom desperately, because he meant to explore the free world and all the pleasures it had to offer, as only a young, new, wealthy heir could. He could relax and enjoy. He had plenty of time to get it all out of his system. He couldn’t imagine ever being sisual with just one person, and certainly not Steff, but that particular problem was years away. He would deal with the complications of the appearance of monogamy, only when partnered to Steff.
And with that, he walked away from his Aunt Kayshia.
But she shouted after him,
“You’d better be careful with Maxsin, dear nephew, girls like that have a way of getting exactly what they want, regardless of you and your plans.”
